Russians’ attitude to mandatory coronavirus vaccination and QR codes

More than half of respondents (53%) are not afraid of contracting coronavirus, 45% are afraid. This ratio has remained almost unchanged for the last several months.

The number of Russians who have been vaccinated keeps growing and reached 46% at the end of November. At the same time the number of people who are not ready to get vaccinated continues to decrease, since April of this year their number has almost halved and today amounts to 36% of Russians.

The attitude to the idea of universal mandatory vaccination has not changed much compared to June. More than half of respondents do not support it (35% are completely against it, 19% are rather unsupportive). 42% of Russians are in favour of the idea: 21% of Russians support universal mandatory vaccination of the population in some way.

Among those opposed to mandatory vaccination against coronavirus, the prevailing opinion is that vaccination against COVID-19 “should be voluntary; this is a personal matter; mandatory vaccination violates human rights” (this point of view is shared by about 37% of those who do not support mandatory vaccination).  Another 21% do not trust the vaccine because it is “new and not properly tested” Only 2% of the respondents see mandatory vaccination as a “conspiracy, genocide, chipping”.

Three quarters (76%) of the respondents have a negative attitude towards introduction of electronic passes for public transport. There is a slightly more welcoming attitude towards introduction of electronic passes for visiting public places and mass events: 50% are completely against the initiative; 17% are rather against it. 30% support the introduction of QR codes for visiting restaurants, museums, shopping centres and mass events.

About half of Russians (51%) believe that mass protests against the introduction of electronic passes as unlikely; but 43% consider them possible. About a quarter of Russians would be willing to take part in such rallies if they take place in their place of residence.

METHODOLOGY

This survey was conducted November 25 – December 1 2021, among a representative sample of all Russian urban and rural residents. The sample was comprised of 1603 people aged 18 or older in 137 municipalities of 50 regions of the Russian Federation. The survey was conducted as a personal interview in respondents’ homes. The answer distribution is presented as percentages of the total number of participants along with data from previous surveys.

The statistical error of these studies for a sample of 1600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:

3.4% for indicators around 50%

2.9% for indicators around 25%/75%

2.0% for indicators around 10%/90%

1.5% for indicators around 5%/95%
