A third of Russians are familiar with the activities of Memorial*. Among those who are aware of his work, more than half (58%) have a positive attitude towards the organisation. Also, among Russians, familiar with the organization, the prevailing opinion is that the liquidation of Memorial* is a political process, aimed at suppressing of independent public organisations.
[1]A third of Russians (30%) are in some way familiar with the activities of Memorial*: 6% know a lot about it, 24% have heard of it. 70% of the respondents know nothing about the organisation. Respondents over 55 years of age (41%) are best informed about the activities of Memorial*. Respondents aged 18-24 are the least informed group (16%).

Members of the 40-54 age group (65%) who know about the organisation, are the most approving of it.

Two-thirds of respondents (66%) who know about Memorial* in cities with a population of up to 100 thousand people speak positively about this public organisation. In Moscow, the number is 55%.

This survey was conducted November 25 – December 1 2021, among a representative sample of all Russian urban and rural residents. The sample was comprised of 1603 people aged 18 or older in 137 municipalities of 50 regions of the Russian Federation. The survey was conducted as a personal interview in respondents’ homes. The answer distribution is presented as percentages of the total number of participants along with data from previous surveys.
The statistical error of these studies for a sample of 1600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:
3.4% for indicators around 50%
2.9% for indicators around 25%/75%
2.0% for indicators around 10%/90%
1.5% for indicators around 5%/95%
