64% of Russians closely monitor the situation around Ukraine. 81% of respondents support the actions of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine. The dominant feelings among Russians caused by military actions in Ukraine are “pride for Russia” (51%), “anxiety, fear, horror” (31%), “shock” (12%).

 

64% of Russians closely monitor the situation around Ukraine: 29% – very closely, 35% – quite closely; about a third (35%) practically do not follow: 27% follow without much attention, 8% do not follow at all.

People aged 55 and older are following the events most of all: 76% of them are closely watching; 70% of respondents from the 40-54 group are closely watching, about half (51%) from the 25-39 group, and 43% in the youngest group, 18-24 years old.

81% of respondents support the actions of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine: 53% definitely support, 28% rather support; 14% do not support the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Among the respondents aged 18-24, 29% definitely support, rather 42%; at the age of 25-39, the level of support is 42% and 31%, respectively. These two categories represent the highest proportion (about 20%) of those who do not support the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine.

56% of respondents aged 40-54 definitely support, 27% – rather; in the category of 55 years and older, 64% of respondents definitely support, 22% – rather.

Among respondents who approve of the policies of the President of the Russian Federation, the level of support for the actions of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine is 89%. Among those who disapprove of the policies of the head of state, support for the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is about a third (32%), and 57% do not support the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

As the main reasons why they do not support the actions of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine, respondents cite the following arguments: “against the war, people are dying, civilians are suffering” (43%), “this is another state, you can not climb into another country, let them figure it out themselves” (19%).

Among respondents who support the actions of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine, opinions prevail that Russia has launched a “special operation” to “protect the Russian population, civilians of the LPR/DPR” (43%), to “prevent an attack on Russia” (25%), to “get rid of nationalists, eradicate fascism, restore order” (21%).

The dominant feelings among Russians caused by military actions in Ukraine are “pride for Russia” (51%), “anxiety, fear, horror” (31%), “shock” (12%). The 18-24-year-old group is the only one where “anxiety, fear, horror” prevails (37%), followed by “pride for Russia” (33%), “shock” (15%); in addition, in this age group, relative to others, there is a feeling of “depression, stupor” (12%).

36% of respondents believe that a significant number of countries condemned the actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, as “they obey the United States and NATO,” 29% – that “they were misinformed by the Western media,” 27% – that “the world has always been against Russia.” 16% see the reason that these countries “believe that Russia has violated international law and the rights of Ukraine,” 15% – that “they are afraid that Russia will treat them the same as Ukraine,” another 12% – that “they are outraged by Russia’s actions.”

Respondents aged 18-24 years have the last three answer options prevailing, in other age groups – the first three options.

METHODOLOGY

The survey by the Levada Center was conducted March 24 – 30 2022, among a representative sample of all Russian urban and rural residents. The sample was comprised of 1632 people aged 18 or older in 137 municipalities of 50 regions of the Russian Federation. The survey was conducted as a personal interview in respondents’ homes. The answer distribution is presented as percentages of the total number of participants along with data from previous surveys.

The statistical error of these studies for a sample of 1600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:

3.4% for indicators around 50%

2.9% for indicators around 25%/75%

2.0% for indicators around 10%/90%

1.5% for indicators around 5%/95%
