People in power

More than half of Russians (56%) believe that the current people in power are concerned only with their financial and career well-being. This indicator has been growing over the past few years and reached the level of 2011 (54%). Only 16% believe that they are a good team leading the country in the right way – the lowest point since 2013.

National Unity Day

Two-thirds (64%) of Russians know that National Unity Day is celebrated on November 4. This indicator has grown significantly since 2017 (53%).

Events of the month

Nobel Peace Prize

A quarter of Russians know about the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The same amount of people have a positive attitude to this event. Among fellow Nobel Prize winners people most often recall M. Gorbachev, A. Sakharov and A. Solzhenitsyn.

Coronavirus, vaccine and measures

Half of Russians are afraid of contracting coronavirus, the other half are not afraid. The share of Russians who are not ready to get vaccinated has been gradually decreasing for six months. More than half of respondents believe that the main COVID-related issues are yet to come. The most popular measure to combat the epidemic has become the mandatory vaccination of certain groups of citizens. The least popular is lockdown. 61% of Russians believe that coronavirus is a biological weapon.

Torture

Two-thirds of Russians believe that torture is unacceptable under any circumstances. 20% believe that torture is permissible in extreme cases: if it can save the innocent lives or to those who have committed serious violent crimes.

Problems of the society

In August, Russians considered rising prices, poverty and corruption to be the main problems of society. A third of respondents considered the coronavirus epidemic one of the main problems of the society. Concerns about rising prices have grown in the last few months.

The law and law enforcement

Half of Russians (49%) believe that it’s possible to live in Russia without breaking the law. The same number of people (47%) believe the opposite. More than half of Russians (58%) do not feel protected by the law. Most Russians agree that many government officials practically do not obey the law. The prevailing point of view is that the law enforcement is serving the interests of the authorities.

Democracy, socialism and market reforms

Almost half (44%) of Russians consider themselves people with democratic beliefs, slightly more people (47%) do not think so. 18% of Russians would call themselves supporters of leftist, socialist ideas. A third of Russians (32%) are in favor of market reforms in the economy.
