Games Russians Play

The percentage of Russians who play games has increased over 10 years most commonly, respondents play games on a smartphone, cards, chess and checkers. Over 10 years, the share of players of mobile games (on a smartphone) has increased significantly, while the share of computer players is decreasing. In addition, Russians began to play table games and lotteries slightly more frequent.

Over 10 years, the share of Russians playing games has increased by 7 percentage points – from 59% in June 2013 to 66% in November 2023. Currently, 72% of men and 61% of women say they play games of various types. Among young people (18-24 years old), the proportion is 83 %.

The share of mobile game players (on a smartphone) has increased significantly, up 18 p.p. since 2013. Among young people (18-24 years old), 52% of respondents play mobile games, 33% play card games and 17% play online computer games.

Men are more likely than women say they play chess (21% and 6% respectively), backgammon (13% and 3%), online games on the computer (11% and 4%) and offline games on the computer (11% and 5%), while women are more likely than men say they play bingo (11% and 5% respectively) otherwise – men’s and women’s preferences in games differ slightly.

Older respondents (55 years and older) are the least likely to play games, among whom 46% do not play any games, as well as people who barely have enough money for food (46%).


The all-Russian survey by the Levada Center was conducted November 23 – 29 2023, among a representative sample of all Russian urban and rural residents. The sample consisted of 1625 people aged 18 or older in 137 municipalities of 50 regions of the Russian Federation. The survey was conducted as a personal interview in respondents’ homes. The distribution of responses is given as a percentage of the total number of respondents.

The statistical error of these studies for a sample of 1600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:

3.4% for indicators around 50%

2.9% for indicators around 25%/75%

2.0% for indicators around 10%/90%

1.5% for indicators around 5%/95%
